CONFORMITY & RESISTANCE

Come and watch our explosive performance of Afro-Brazilian drumming and dance, broadening cultural understanding surrounding the spiritual practices of enslaved Africans in Brazil as part of Chorlton Arts Festival 2024.

Our performance entitled will demonstrate both samba reggae and capoeira art forms in two single authentic shows, reflecting how percussionists would meet secretly to practice ritualistic and spiritual rhythms, in resistance to forced Catholic conversion, whilst conversely, capoeira’s conformed to expectation by framing their defensive martial art as “dance”.

Our combined art-forms, illustrate the perfect synergy of music & movement, at the heart of Salvador, still practiced today in sacred tradition and our collaboration is an event not to be missed…

Just turn up on the night postcode location M21 7SJ - first performance 7pm, 2nd performance at 8pm with capoeira demonstrations in between!

"We were in serious need of some new music at our event. Everyone in our crew and our community were beyond blown away by Batala Manchester's dynamic drumming and larger than life sound. They are a friendly, professional and enthusiastic bunch who went the extra mile to fit right in with our event. We certainly look forward to having them back next year."
